Living on the Penders for a combination of over 20 years, we have a long list of favorite activities. We tend to go for hikes and sit on beaches, and here are our favorite five of each: (Numbers correspond to the CRD map/legend found at the website below.) Most of these hikes are the longer and more difficult hikes on the island. Please be sure to pack appropriately and research the terrain of each hike. We are happy to answer your questions so please reach out!
A thorough listing of trails and ocean accesses are available on the CRD website here: https://www.crd.bc.ca/parks-recreation-culture/parks-trails/piprc/parks-trails
Beaches |
Hikes |
Brooks Pt. (Between 46 & 64) An amazing, easy to get to protected area. Garry oak trees, fast-moving water, rocks overlooking the ocean, native plant meadow… this is a fantastic spot. |
Beaumont Marine Park (Gulf Island National Park, accessible near the end of Ainslie Point Rd. (Near 75)) A long hike through various forests – deep and dark, bright and dry, mossy hillsides, steep cliffs over the water, with a fantastic beach reward at the end. Note it’s mostly downhill one way and uphill on the way back. |
Mortimer Spit (38) |
George Hill (16) A shortish hike to breathtaking views. |
Niagara Beach (34) Steep but shortish walk down to one of few sandy beaches on the island. |
Found Rd Trail (50) A long hike through deep dark old forest, down and then up and then down again to a rocky beach. |
Shingle Bay Campground Beach (Gulf Island National Park) A lovely walk (with a few steep bits) that takes you to a very special spot. |
Oak Bluffs (20) A steep uphill climb through a mossy forest to an amazing view. |
Thieves Bay (23) Beach and Marina. THE spot for on-shore whale watching. |
Mount Norman (Gulf Island National Park, accessible from the same trail head as Beaumont, or from the other side of the mountain on Canal Rd on South Pender. |

Raven Rock Farm is neighbours with Southridge Country Store, a locally owned specialty grocery store with SO many goodies! Southridge has a selection of meals to prepare at home, as well as a large selection of cheeses, meats, olives, spreads, etc. for amazing charcuterie. Across the street is Pender Island Home Hardware Building Center and, in the summer the food truck in “Frankie’s Field” at Southridge serves up tasty food. We have great neighbours!

We highly recommend you eat at Woods on Pender while you are here. We do supply Woods with fresh produce in season, so we are a little biased, but they make fantastic food!

A vehicle is recommended during your stay at Raven Rock Farm. However, we are very close to Hope Bay (1km), the Community Hall where you'll find our thriving Saturday Market (2km) and the Driftwood Center Mall (4km). Cycling and walking are also excellent ways to get around, but keep in mind that our roads are best for experienced cyclists who can brave narrow winding roads with many blind corners and steep hills. Pender’s roads do not always have wide shoulders or room for pedestrians. We love walking on the roads, but are prepared to stand in the grassy shoulder or ditch in case of heavy traffic.
